Yorkshire Hotel Fined £24,000 Over Delays
Back in November 2017 hazardous material (asbestos) was found in several areas of a Bradford Hotel, however the companies owners admitted in court that they did not instruct removal work until the following spring.
Delays in the removal have since lead to the court fining the owners £24,000, but the consequences could have been much worse, they were informed the figure would have been a 6 figure sum had it not been for the impact of COVID-19 on the hospitality industry.
The company had already spent over £100,000 since 2018 removing asbestos which was found in areas used by staff, but not guests. However they did admit to unacceptable delays and health and safety breaches which have put staff at risk.
The court heard that this was not a cost cutting exercise but more of a failure to keep on top of things.
Asbestos is a natural mineral and carcinogen that causes mesothelioma, over 12,000 Lung disease deaths each year are estimated to be linked to past exposures at work including mesothelioma.
We provide a half day Asbestos Awareness course which is designed to raise awareness of asbestos containing materials (ACMs) in a refurbishment/maintenance environment.
