Fragile Asbestos Roof Gives Way With Fatal Repercussions
We all know the statistics of fatalities and risks associated with working at heights, however we continue to see these horrific incidents in the workplace.
Back in May 2017 a roofer was simply completing snagging work on a replacement roof when he fell through part of the roof which was made from fragile asbestos cement sheets.
With no safety nets in place, the HSE found that the building occupier had failed to take reasonably practicable measures to reduce the risk to the roof maintenance workers. The worker unfortunately suffered fatal injuries as a result of the fall.
The risks are well known regarding fragile surfaces and as a result the building owners were handed an £80,000 fine and ordered to pay costs of £6,656 after pleading guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, sections 3.
