As a result of a worker losing his thumb from a floor-mounted band resaw. The guard stopped working during a production run drawing in the worker’s right hand.
As a result of failing to take the machine out for maintenance the Timber company not only injured a worker but also suffered financial implications.
PUWER which covers the use and maintenance of work equipment was the main breach highlighted.
They pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 11(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and Regulation 5 of The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. They were fined £13,400 and ordered to pay costs of £5,358.0.
