What is SMAS and why do you need it?

SMAS Accreditation, also known as SMAS Worksafe, is a UK-Health and Safety Certification that demonstrates your compliance as a contractor, subcontractor or supplier. It confirms that you’ve met core safety standards expected across the construction industry, as well as within manufacturing, engineering and all other related trade sectors.

To achieve your SMAS SSIP accreditation, you must provide evidence that you meet required assessment criteria, which typically includes:

  • Up-to-date and relevant health and safety policies
  • Training records, staff qualifications, toolbox talks and so on.
  • Details of your Competent Person and their qualifications
  • Evidence showing how you audit, record and improve your safety systems
  • How many levels are there to the SMAS accreditation?

There are three levels to the SMAS accreditation. These are, Worksafe (SSIP), Worksafe Plus, and Worksafe Pro.

    • The Worksafe SSIP accreditation follows the 14 Core Criteria points but is condensed in to 10 simple questions for businesses to answer.
    • Worksafe Plus combines SSIP with the SMAS standard and also assesses your Environmental and Quality Management systems.
    • Worksafe Pro is considered the “top-tier of Health & Safety certification” and tends to be best suited for large-scale, or public sector projects.
  • How does SMAS differ from other SSIP schemes?

Main differences lie within recognition within specific clients, and additional services each provider offers. If you’re unsure which SSIP you need, AW Safety can advise on the best scheme that best suits your business or clients, simply visit our SSIP service page, or get in touch on 0330 223 7470 or fill out a contact form here.

  • Do I need a Competent Person for SMAS accreditation?

Yes, a Competent Person is required to show that your business has access to competent health and safety advice. AW Safety can act as your Named Competent Persons and provide documentation and ongoing support to help with your application process.

  • How long is SMAS accreditation valid for?

Your SMAS SSIP certification is valid for 12 months and should be renewed annually to ensure your business can demonstrate ongoing compliance.

  • How long does the SMAS accreditation process take?

The timeframe from submission to completion can vary, depending on how complete your documentation is. Many businesses tend to experience delays due to outdated documents and policies, but that’s where we come in. With our support, most applications can progress quickly, as we ensure documents are correct before submission.
