Falls From Heights Contributes to Highest Workplace Fatalities in 2020
Between 2019 and 2020 over 700,000 non fatal injuries occurred in the workplace with a further 111 resulting in a fatality. 23 of which were reported in the midlands region with Scotland seeing the largest fluctuation increase.
40 of this year’s fatalities came from within the construction industry, constituting to its high risk reputation. The 2020 statistics showed an increase in death rate in the construction industry which has ranged between 31 and 47 over the past 5 years.
The main cause of fatal injuries came in the form of falls from heights (29) which accounts for a quarter of all deaths in the workplace in 2020.
Safety First Across The UK
The UK has one of the lowest fatal injury rates when compared with large EU economies and last year showed a drop in the number of HSE case prosecutions (325) and the level of fines. Albeit many workplaces other than key workers and construction workers have been inactive during much of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Focus on Mental Health
Over the last few years the rate of self reported work related stress, depression and anxiety has increased. 828,000 workers were reported to be suffering from new and long standing symptoms as of last year with over 347,000 reported as new cases.
Cost to the Economy
Britain incurred annual costs of over £32 billion across 2018/19 with £16.2 billion relating to work related injury and illness (with the exclusion of long latency illnesses such as cancer). £10.6 billion was spent on new cases of illness. £5.5 billion equated to workplace injuries.
