An employee was emptying goods a transport shipping container at work when he fell approximately 1.5 metres from the rear of the container and unfortunately died because of the injuries he sustained.
Although the company had various generic risk assessments and safe working method statements, they had failed to identify simple and easy control measures to prevent a fall. They also did not have a specific risk assessment for this task.
His employer pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. The company was fined £200,000 and ordered to pay costs of £15,322.
